Retz Funeral Home was established in 1926 by the Jacob Opp family at its present location in Helena, MT. Larry and Henry Opp took in a partner, Ralph Conrad and the firm operated under the name Opp & Conrad. During the 1930’s, Howard and Ernest Retz returned from Mortuary School and Howard began working at Opp & Conrad. At the close of WWII, the Opp brothers sold their ownership to Forrest, Ernest, & Howard Retz. The firm became Opp – Conrad – Retz. In 1946, Ralph Conrad sold his interest to the Retz brothers and later the name was changed to Retz Funeral Home. In the early 1950’s, Forrest Retz sold his interest to Ernest & Howard. Tom Twichel joined the firm in 1960 and became an officer in the Retz Corporation formed in 1964. By 1967, Ben Burgess became part of the corporation and he and Tom purchased the interests of the Retz Brothers. In 1984, Tom and Ben sold their interests to John Malletta and Tom Vertin. Retz Funeral Home is managed by long-time Retz Funeral Home funeral director Randy Wilke.
